A Newbie's Guide to Keyword Research

If you want to learn about keyword research and how it is crucial to your business online, then you'll want to read this article. Specifically we will be discussing the importance of long tail keywords, low competition keywords and how to quickly find them. After reading this article, you should be able to research keywords like a pro.

1) Long Tail Keywords
Long tail keywords are vital to your success online. Long tail keywords are longer keywords (3 words or more). According to research, 80% of all searches are multiple-words (long tail). These keywords are very easy to rank for; meaning you can secure a top position with little effort. These long tail keywords lead to a higher conversion compared to generic keywords. These keywords are very beneficial in the long run because they are targeting people who are seeking specific information, and therefore more keen to take action (click on ads, subscribe to newsletter). Long tail keywords are great for any website because of its low competition, higher conversion rate and more valuable visitors.

2) Low Competition Keywords
Unless you have an established/authority website with few thousand backlinks, it is important to target relatively low competition keywords. If you are targeting for "dog", you will have a hard time, because there are millions of other web pages competing for the first page. Therefore it is better to target easier words like: "dog training in Detroit". Low competition keywords are good for relatively new websites, because it is easy to rank for. These keywords generally tend not to fluctuate more, meaning your website will stay on top. If you are just getting started, then I recommend looking for some of these low competitive keywords. Next we will be showing you how to find these great keywords to target for your website.

3) How to find these keywords?
There are many places to look, but here are some of my personal favorites. Your first option would be to think like a customer, step inside your target audience's shoes. If you were a reader, what would you be searching for? Another place to look would be Google's suggestion. As you type in a few words, Google will automatically try to suggest some searches in the search bar. These keywords are sorted by popularity, which can give you an idea of how popular they are. Finally the most popular keyword research tool: Google Keyword Tool. It might look slightly confusing at first, but it is very useful. It displays all the keywords information right from the search engine; all you need to do is pick the good one with just enough competition and traffic.

There are certain types of keywords, which are worth optimizing for. Targeting the right types of keywords like: long tail keywords and low competitive keywords are crucial to your online business. You also know how to quickly and easily find these keywords. Put these principles into practice by doing proper keyword research, and you will see an increase in the number of visitors to your website.
